Environmental and Sustainability Policy
1. Purpose
Ashfield Makerspace (AMS) is committed to minimising its environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices. As a community organisation, we recognise our responsibility to operate in a way that conserves resources, reduces waste, and supports environmental awareness among members.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all AMS activities, including use of facilities, workshops, events, procurement, and waste management.
3. Principles
Our environmental and sustainability approach is guided by the following principles:
- Reduce: Minimise waste, energy, and resource consumption wherever possible.
- Reuse: Promote repair, up-cycling, and creative reuse of materials.
- Recycle: Ensure responsible segregation and recycling of waste.
- Responsibility: Encourage all members to act in sustainable ways that protect the environment.
4. Energy and Resource Use
- Energy-efficient lighting and equipment will be used where possible.
- Heating and electrical equipment must be switched off when not in use.
- Members are encouraged to use shared resources responsibly to avoid unnecessary consumption.
5. Waste Management
- Clearly labelled recycling and general waste bins will be provided in the outside area. Fabrics have a recycle bin in the cutting area
- Members are expected to sort waste correctly and reduce single-use plastics.
- Hazardous waste (e.g. chemicals, solvents, batteries) will be disposed of in line with legal requirements.
6. Materials and Procurement
- We will prioritise sustainable, recycled, or second-hand materials where possible.
- Donations of materials and equipment will be encouraged to extend product lifecycles.
- Suppliers and partners will be chosen with consideration for their environmental impact and ethical practices.
7. Sustainable Making Practices
- The Makerspace will encourage repair, maintenance, and reuse over disposal.
- Workshops and activities will promote environmental awareness and sustainable techniques.
- High-impact equipment (e.g. kilns, laser cutters, 3D printers) will be used efficiently and responsibly.
8. Travel and Transport
- Members and visitors are encouraged to walk, cycle, use public transport, or car-share when attending AMS.
- Where possible, online meetings will be used to reduce travel.
9. Education and Engagement
- Sustainability will be integrated into inductions and training sessions.
- Environmental information and tips will be shared on noticeboards, newsletters, and events.
- Members are encouraged to contribute ideas and feedback on improving the Makerspace’s sustainability.
10. Monitoring and Review
- The Trustees/Management Committee will monitor compliance with this policy.
- The policy will be reviewed annually and updated as needed to reflect new practices, technology, and legislation.
